Srinagar, Dec 23: The president of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti, today said her party is not in a hurry to form the Government in the State and will decide about its alliance partner keeping in view its agenda of taking the political and development process forward.
Addressing a press conference at her residence after the declaration of the results Mufti said: “We will explore the possibilities that will meet aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and out agenda of taking forward the political process.”
The PDP president said her party is not interested in just cobbling up a Government but in a combination that will provide good governance. “Our priority is not to cobble up a Government. We are looking for a sustainable Government which can provide a good governance…it will take time to see which formation will accommodate the aspirations of the people,” she said.
Mufti said that although there was a fractured mandate but it was against National Conference and Congress coalition, dropping a broad hint about the possibilities of its alliance partner. “In 2002, we had 16 seats there was a credibility crisis and people voted against National Conference. Today also people have voted against NC and Congress,” she said.
When asked about former Chief Minister and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad extending unconditional support to her party, Mehbooba referred to the PDP-Congress coalition from 2002 to 2008 saying the common minimum programme of the two parties had worked well for the State as well as the rest of the country.
“The Government should have credibility and work to the expectations of the people,” she said.
Mehbooba thanked the people for making PDP the single largest party but admitted that the results were not according to their expectations. “It is not a decisive mandate and not to our expectations. We thank the people of Jammu and Kashmir for making us the single largest party,” he said.
Earlier, senior PDP leader and Member Parliament Muzaffar Hussain Baig said that though the party is not in a hurry to take decision over the formation of Government, but the party does not rule out the BJP to be their partner.
Baig said that the BJP top leadership won’t scrap the controversial Article 370.”See we are not at all in a hurry to take a decision in this regard but let me tell you here that though both the parties PDP and BJP during the election campaign targeted each other but for the formation of Government BJP is not untouchable for us. The top leadership of the BJP won’t scrap the controversial Article 370,” he said.
The MP urged the party to give chances to both the Kashmir and Jammu region winning candidates to play their role in the Government. “In the interest of the people of Jammu and Kashmir I urge the party leadership to give a chance to both the Jammu and Kashmir region’s winning candidates in the Government, “he said.
Baig said that the party will sit in next couple of days and will take some important decisions regarding the formation of Government. “The Party top leadership will meet in next couple of days and will take some important decisions regarding the formation of Government”, he said.
