Calls on NC to clarify stand on governance

SRINAGAR, Apr 10: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) general secretary Mehboob Beigh today accused the National Conference (NC) of failing to represent the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the Assembly despite enjoying a strong mandate.
Speaking to reporters after a PDP meeting in Srinagar, Beigh said the NC has maintained silence on key issues facing the people of Union Territory and questioned whether the party intended to remain inactive until Statehood is restored.
“No one asked them to confront Delhi. But at least they should speak for the pain and issues of people. If they have decided not to work until J&K gets Statehood, they should say it clearly,” he said.
Beigh said the PDP’s meeting, chaired by party president Mehbooba Mufti, was aimed at reviewing the current political situation and strategizing to play the role of an effective opposition in the Union Territory.
Criticising NC’s approach during the recent Assembly session, Beigh said despite having a one-sided mandate from Kashmir, the party failed to raise pressing issues like Statehood, land rights, and the controversial Waqf bill. “Even the Prime Minister and Home Minister have spoken about restoring Statehood. At least demand a timeline from them,” Beigh said.
He drew comparisons with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying Kejriwal continued to work and protest for the people despite limited powers under the Union Territory structure. “If NC will only draw salaries and not work for people because it is a Union Territory, they should tell that to the public openly,” he said.
Beigh also criticised the Assembly Speaker for terming the Waqf bill “sub judice” and avoiding discussion on it. “When Article 370 was sub judice, elections were fought on that issue. Why can not we talk about the Waqf bill in the Assembly?” he asked.
Beigh said the PDP is committed to strengthening itself as a constructive opposition and to amplify the voice of the people in J&K.
