“Peaceful Transfer Of Power Must Continue”: PM On US Capitol Violence

New Delhi: The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he expressed shock at the storming of the US Capitol in Washington by supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump. “Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
“Distressed to see news about rioting and violence in Washington DC. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power must continue. The democratic process cannot be allowed to be subverted through unlawful protests,” PM Modi tweeted.
The US Capitol had to be locked down Wednesday as pro-Trump demonstrators broke down barricades outside the Capitol and swarmed inside as the lawmakers were counting Electoral College votes to certify President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President elect Kamala Harris” election victory. A person was shot dead inside the US Capitol amid the chaotic scenes, reports said.
Unverified videos appeared to show throngs of pro-Trump rioters breaking windows, climbing on rafters, ripping down U.S. flags and roaming the Senate chamber. Lawmakers were told to grab gas masks as police deployed tear gas inside the Rotunda, the ornate area under the dome that connects the House and the Senate, according to the Washington Post.
Leaders around the world condemned the incident, expressing shock at the chaos unfolding in a country they once relied upon for global leadership.
“Disgraceful scenes in U.S. Congress. The United States stands for democracy around the world and it is now vital that there should be a peaceful and orderly transfer of power,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted. (AGENCY)
