People and Polythene

Sir,
This has reference to the editorial regarding use of polythene, published in DE  Feb 3, 2018. I fully agree with you that merely forming of committees to check such menaces as one being posed by the use of polythene will not be sufficient. Even any kind of activity on that count like booking and punishing the culprits will also not help because it will just be an eyewash to make public one or two cases. The eagles would fly safe whereas pigeons will fall prey. The gap between issuing of orders and implementing the same will keep on widening with the widening wings of corruption in the society. Do you think the order implementing agencies know nothing about those defying the orders?
Use of polythene is not the only thing to be rectified in our society and no law enforcing agency could do it till the public on the whole develops an understanding to stand against them in one voice. Nothing concrete will happen till the people themselves refuse the polythene bags from vendors and start buying their groceries from those who offer them in bio-degradable ones. But you see, in a country where people have to be fined to ensure the safety of their precious life while they do not wear helmet or seat belt when driving, we cannot expect them to stop using the polythene bags forthwith. It is a matter of vision where we the stakeholders are not able to conclude the end we are heading for by using and then disposing off this unfriendly material in our surroundings.
Other than what has been described above, we have been attacking our environment from so many other fronts also. The killer waste of industries has polluted our water bodies to such extent that aqua-life has almost finished. The poisonous gases being emitted through the chimneys of factories are responsible for deadly cancer and respiratory diseases in human beings besides being a threat to flora and fauna.
All this could be prevented if only we the people develop a will. Our factories and manufacturing plants could adopt a zero discharge waste facility where not even a single drop of waste water or a unit of smoke is discharged into the air.
Yours etc…..
