JAMMU, Feb 14: Protests rocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Juganu Morh over the death of a ten year old boy who died after being allegedly hit by an Air Force School bus near Roun Domail, Dhar Road, district Udhampur.
The vehicular traffic came to a standstill when hundreds of irate people took to Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Dhar Road over the death of 10-year-old Divanshu, son of Jagdish Kumar of Juganu.
They raised slogans against the Government, Traffic and Police department for their failure in keeping a regular check on the speedy vehicles plying on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and also for not keeping a vigil towards the safety of the pedestrian moving on the road.
Talking to the Excelsior, one of the residents alleged that traffic and police departments have totally failed to check the safety of the pedestrian in the area.
He said that the Armed Forces vehicles, passenger buses and mini buses drivers drove their vehicles rashly, leading to accidents, but the traffic and police department personnel remained mute spectators, thus showing their apathy and non-seriousness towards the common masses.
“No one from the Government has taken any initiative to control the accidents on the National Highway and totally failed to keep a check on the vehicles plying rashly”, he alleged.
When contacted SP Udhampur, Benam Tosh told the Excelsior that a 10-year-old Divanshu was crushed to death this afternoon by Air Force School bus bearing registration number 04C-86174W near Roun Domail, Dhar Road.
He further added that after receiving the information about the accident, police team rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to district hospital, where doctors pronounced him as brought dead.
The body was handed over to family members after completion of legal formalities, while the vehicle has been seized and the driver of the school bus identified as Prakash Madhav was also arrested.
A case under Section 304-A has been registered at Police Station Udhampur and investigations are in progress, he added.
“As the news of his death spread, hundreds of people took to National Highway seeking probe into the matter”, the SP said.
After the assurance by the senior police officers, the protestors dispersed and vehicular movement was restored on the highway, he added.
