POONCH, Aug 27: Residents of Chandak and adjoining areas held protest demonstration on Poonch-Mandi road and disrupted movement of traffic for more than two hours today.
The villagers in large number came out on the road at around 8.30 am today and raised barricades on the road. They were opposing illegal mining of sand and gravels by an influential contractor of the area under a bridge on main Poonch road. These villagers were shouting slogans against DC Poonch and Forest and Environment  Minister and alleged that illegal mining under the bridges was causing damage to many bridges and the administration was turning blind eye.
They also alleged increasing corruption at every level and maintained that no body seems to be worried about the general public. They demanded that lifting of sand and gravels near the bridges be strictly banned and activities of the influential mafia be curtailed.
Later, ADC Poonch, Addl SP and SHO concerned reached the spot they assured the people that an order in this connection will be issued. They also deployed policemen at the bridge to prevent such activity. Later, the people lifted dharna at around 10.30 am and allowed movement of traffic.
