SAMBA, Nov 7: The irate residents of village Paloti in Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua district blocked the National Highway in protest against the mysterious death of a tipper driver late last night at a stone crusher at Tapyal in Samba district.
According to police, the tipper driver identified as Darshan Kumar, 35, son of Lekh Raj of village Paloti who was loading his tipper bearing number JK21-9197 late last night at the stone crusher in Tapyal Samba came into the contact of the crane and was crushed to death.
Soon coming to know about the death, the family members and relatives of Darshan along with villagers of Paloti took to National Highway this morning along with dead body and blocked it. However the police intervened and asked the irate mob that the accident has taken place in Samba district so they should protest there.
Later the mob reached Londhi Morh in Samba and blocked the Jammu-Pathankote National Highway for three hours.
To lessen the heavy jam of traffic on NH authorities diverted the traffic via Border road.
They demanded adequate compensation for the bereaved family which had no source of income. Later senior police and civil officers reached the spot and Rs two lakh was paid on spot compensation to the family out of Rs three lakh as agreed by crusher owner.
Police said remaining Rs one lakh will be paid tomorrow. On this assurance the protestors dispersed and body was taken for cremation.
The Police has registered a case under Section 174 and the dead body was handed over to family members after postmortem.
