JAMMU, Sept 1: People held a protest demonstration at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital, after a two months old male baby died, due to alleged negligence of the doctors. However, junior doctors at SMGS and Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) went on strike for couple of hours after some family members of the deceased baby assaulted a lady doctor.
An irate mob along with the dead body of the baby assembled outside SMGS Hospital and held protest, alleging negligence of the doctors led to the death of their two months old kin.
The protestors also manhandled Dr Sonam, First year PG Pediatrics, which created anguish among the junior doctors in SMGS and GMC Hospitals, who later went on strike.
Father of the baby Ashok Kumar, a resident of Preet Nagar alleged that his baby was admitted in SMGS Hospital last evening after he was suffering from fever.
He added that none of the doctors attended the patient despite several requests, which resulted into the death of their baby early this morning.
He said that there is no proper facility in the hospital and no senior staff is available, adding that junior doctors are diagnosing the patients.
Later on police rushed to the spot and pacified the protestors assuring them that they will take up the matter with concerned authorities.
Protesting against the manhandling of a lady doctor the junior doctors suspended their work in both SMGS and GMCH to express their anguish. They were demanding enhanced security cover in the hospitals.
To defuse the situation a meeting between Principal GMCH Dr Ghansham Dev Gupta and Junior doctors was held later on, in which Principal assured the protestors that foolproof security will be provided to the doctors in the hospitals.
On the assurance of the Principal, GMCH, the junior doctors resumed their duties.
Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital Dr Dara Singh when contacted said that the baby was suffering from heart ailment and the family members were forcing the doctors to conduct the surgery, which was not possible here in Jammu. Such critical surgeries are to be conducted in PGI, AIIMS, etc. He also refuted the allegation of negligence of doctors.
Principal, GMCH Dr Ghansham Dev Gupta when asked about enhanced security cover to junior doctors in GMCH and SMGS Hospitals, said that a letter has been dispatched to DG CRPF seeking deployment of CRPF personnel in the GMCH and associated hospitals.
