JAMMU, June 12: Traffic on Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch road was blocked by the people this evening at Chowki Chowra under the jurisdiction of Akhnoor police station when they caught a truck in which bovine animals were being smuggled from Jammu to Rajouri on way to Kashmir via Mughal Road.
Reports said truck No. 8295 JK02AH was spotted by the people at Chowki Chowra late this evening carrying bovine animals. The truck had developed a technical snag and the driver had gone to get it repaired when the people saw the vehicle loaded with bovine animals, some of which had died due to humid weather as the truck was parked there for quite sometime. Some people said it was parked for last two days.
A large number of local people gathered at Chowki Chowra from the surrounding towns and villages and blocked the road keeping dead cattle on the road. They were shouting slogans against police for facilitating bovine smuggling on “monetary considerations’’ and called for stern action against them.
They alleged that the bovine smuggling was taking place due to nexus of police-smugglers.
A large number of vehicles were stranded on either side of the road.
The vehicles coming from Rajouri towards Jammu were diverted towards Pouni-Reasi road, reports said.
The people refused to lift dharna when the reports last came in tonight. They were demanding stern action against the police officials involved in bovine smuggling.
