Not the first time though, the High Court on Sept19 sought personal appearance of Commissioner /Secretary ARI and Training including Commissioner Food Safety in a case of food adulteration being heard by it.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice D. S. Thakur while hearing a Public Interest against the food adulteration directed the proposal for amendment to recruitment rules be cleared and pending vacancies be filled in Food Safety Department. The Bench wanted an early action in the matter.
We have mobile food testing laboratories but what it that there are no technicians and no sample is taken randomly for testing. Also, there is shortage of staff in the department of Food Safety. This results in the public taking adulterated food and hence is virtually consuming poisonous stuff which has caused numerous diseases to them. Since amendment in recruitment rules has not been made, it becomes difficult for the concerned officers to go in for recruitment process and filling up of various vacancies in the department.
Court, keeping in view all these aspects has directed Commissioner/ Secretary to ARI and Trainings to clear necessary proposals with regard to amendment in recruitment rules or be present in the court itself in default. The Court has added that the state government shall take all possible steps to ensure the proper implementation of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.
