SRINAGAR, Sept 19: The residents of Ompora in Budgam are suffering due to the contaminated drinking water being supplied to them for the last several months now while the concerned department is turning a blind eye towards their plight.
The local Auqaf members told Excelsior that despite bringing the issue to the notice of the concerned officials, nothing has changed on the ground and the people are left with no option but to consume the impure water.
“It is not fit for use but the irony is that the PHE is still supplying us with the contaminated water by labelling it as filtered water, which is far from reality,” the locals said.
Earlier, the area used to get the water supply from Sukhnag, however, later the same was discontinued and the PHE came up with a plan of constructing a reservoir in the adjoining area.
However, even as there are ample funds available, the work on the reservoir has not been completed causing a delay in making it operational with the result a large population residing in the area is suffering.
The locals said that they are repeatedly bringing the issue to the notice of the concerned officials but no avail. “We have been appraising the AEE including the Executive Engineer, but they have not been responsive at all while as we have been left to suffer,” the residents said.
They said that a few days ago, the concerned AEE dispatched a team to ascertain the facts and that after witnessing for themselves they stated that the water is indeed not fit for consumption. “They said that they will clean the storage tanks, but nothing happened,” they said.
In the absence of clean drinking water in the area which is just on the outskirts of Srinagar, the residents are forced to consume the well-water and are even forced to get the water for drinking purposes from distant places.
The Executive Engineer, PHE Division Chadoora did not respond to repeated calls while the PHEs Control Room said that they will look into the matter.
