PHE workers call off strike

Srinagar June 8: The Daily Wagers and Casual Labourers working in the Public Health Engineering Department (PHE), who were on hunger strike for the past six days, called off their strike after assurances by the Minister that they will be regularised in a phased manner.
Sajad Ahmad, President Kashmir PHE Joint Employees Association told Excelsior that they held a two hour long meeting with the PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma and after his assurances the strike was called off.
The Minister told them that he has directed the Executive Engineers of PHE to submit the detailed report of all daily wagers and casual labours engaged on different schemes from 1994 to 2005 and 2005 onwards before June 20 to the Chief Engineers, PHE, Kashmir and Jammu for onwards submission to the Administrative Department.
Sajjad said that Minister assured them that the report will be put before the cabinet and demands of the PHE daily wagers and casual workers will be met in a phased manner.
A statement issued by the an official spokesman said that Sharma told the striking employees that Government is keen to solve all genuine issues of daily wagers and casual labours of PHE Department who have been engaged from 1994 to 2005 and 2005 onwards, besides left out cases of daily wagers.
