Piles of garbage in town as Safai Karamcharis continue strike

UDHAMPUR, Mar 15: Continuing their indefinite strike for the 15th consecutive day, the Safai Karamcharis of Municipal Committee Udhampur today threatened to further intensify their struggle if the Government does not concede their demands.
Protesting under the banner of Akhil Bhartiya Safai Mazdoor Sangh Udhampur and observing dharna in front of Municipal Committee Udhampur, they are demanding regularization in relaxation to the new recruitment rules for the Class IV jobs, including Safai Karamcharis and Drivers.
Girdhari Lal, Urban Local Body working president J&K and Kaka Husan, president Municipal Udhampur led the protesters. “The strike will continue till Government concedes demands of the Safai Karamcharis, who are frontline warriors but facing discrimination and apathy of the administration,” said Girdhari Lal.
Meanwhile, the ongoing protest has turned the whole town into a pile of garbage and filth is seen lying here and there in Udhampur.
The heaps of the filth are dumped at all streets in Udhampur town but the Municipal Council and district administration Udhampur have failed to get the same removed and clean the area.
Locals visiting the market are forced to cover their mouth as foul smell emanates from the garbage dumps.
Suhil Khokhar, a shopkeeper at the Hospital Road, said that heaps of filth have been dumped in front of their shops for the last 15 day, but neither the Municipal Council nor the District Administration Udhampur takes cognizance of the same. “Several times we have brought up this problem into the notice of higher authorities but all in vain,” he added.
