Christina Aguilera says she was “hurt” when she was pitted against her contemporary Britney Spears in the beginning of their careers in the 1990s.
The 37-year-old singer said it was difficult to see herself being portrayed as the “bad girl”.
“It’s hard to hear yourself being called names. I remember being hurt by these commercials on MTV, pitting Britney as the good girl and me as the bad girl. It’s like, if I’m going to be demure and innocent, that’s OK. But if I’m going to just be myself, I’m trouble,” Aguilera told Cosmopolitan magazine.
The “Infatuation” singer also recalled her feud with Pink in the 2000s, leading to the duo trying to throw punches at each other in a nightclub.
“We were super young and super new at the whole thing, and I think I’m an alpha, and she’s an alpha. I’m used to taking my altercations physical and she’s used to having them verbal. We’re just very different, we’re very different. And we were very young and new. You have to learn – women have to learn how to support each other. It’s not taught to each other in the playground,” she said.
Asked if she had ever tried to turn their arguments physical, Aguilera added, “Actually, she swung at me in a club. Hilarious! I was like, ‘What’s happening right now? What’s happening?'” (PTI)
