JAMMU, Oct 31: Panun Kashmir (PK) has demanded immediate rehabilitation of fire victims of Purkhoo camp whose quarters were totally destroyed along with their all belongings in a devastating fire on October 29.
PK team which visited to the fire-victims to assess the situation was led by its general secretary Kuldeep Raina, organizing secretary B.L. Kaul and Satish Sher.
The leaders interacted with victims including Rakesh Koul, Sanjay Kumar, Pardeep Singh, Lucky Koul, and Retu Devi, each of whom has led their family through years of hardship in these dilapidated one-room tenements, now left in ruins. The PK leaders emphasized that these families had already been living in distress, struggling with overcrowded, unsanitary conditions that offered minimal protection. This fire, they stressed, has left them with nothing but their lives, so Government should immediately come to their rescue.
Satish Sher condemned the lack of preventative measures that led to this tragedy. “For years, the vulnerability of these families has been known, yet no action has been taken. Now, we are seeing the results of this neglect firsthand. Government inaction has put these families in jeopardy, and they cannot survive another Winter without adequate housing and support.”
B.L. Kaul besides immediate aid also demanded a long-term plan to ensure that all displaced families, especially in settlements like Purkhoo, are given secure, humane housing. “The Government must take this as a wake-up call,” Kaul stated.
Kuldeep Raina, addressing the community’s plight, expressed deep concern over the living conditions that had already left these families vulnerable long before the devastating fire. “These families have endured years of hardship, forced to live in cramped, deteriorating tenements. This fire has taken from them what little they had left,” Raina stated.
He emphasized that PK will not rest until these families receive the relief and dignified rehabilitation they deserve, urging the Government to take swift, meaningful action.
Meanwhile, some social organisations including Paruppkar Charitable Trust led by Dr Sushil Wattal a social activist and Kashmiri Hindu Cultural Welfare Trust Bangaluru led by R K Muttoo a senior journalist provided immediate relief to the victim families.
The members of Paruppkar Trust led by Dr Wattal visited the camp and provided blankets to the fire victims besides the members of Hindu Cultural Trust also provided the utensils to the victims for their immediate need and assured further support in future. Both these organisations also urged the Government to immediately rehabilitate these families.
