SRINAGAR: Upping the ante against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his comment that parties opposing note ban were acting like Pakistan’s cover fire to militants, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said the false equivalence with Pakistan was always the last refuge of the BJP in desperate times.

Mr Abdullah, who is the working president of National Conference, said the Prime Minister is feeling the heat over note ban. ”The false equivalence with Pakistan is always the last refuge of the BJP in desperate times. Clearly the Hon PM is feeling the heat,” Mr Abdullah wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Mr Modi slammed the Opposition for criticising the ban on high-value notes and alleged that Opposition parties were trying to rescue the corrupt like Pakistan gives cover fire to militants to cross the border.

”The commotion created in Parliament is like the ‘cover fire’ that Pakistan uses to ensure militants infiltrate into India. Similarly, the ruckus in Parliament lets cheats get away,” the Prime Minister said.    Taking a jibe at Mr Modi over his comment, Mr Abdullah said Pakistan’s population registered a sharp increase today.

Mr Abdullah was reacting to a tweet which read, ”Only growth in Modi Sarkar is of the number of things that apparently turn you Pakistani.” ”I’m sure this is the first time reputed publications including @TheEconomist, @HarvardBiz & many others have been called “Pakistani”,” the NC working president said.
