NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi today recalled the sacrifices of Indian armed soldiers and officers during the Kargil conflict of 1999.

“Remembering our brave soldiers who fought gallantly for the pride of our nation and the security of our citizens during the Kargil War,” he wrote in a Twitter message.

Mr Modi said, “Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us of India’s military prowess and the great sacrifices our armed forces make while steadfastly keeping India safe”.

The cause of the war was the infiltration of Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants into positions on the Indian side of the LoC.

The Indian Army, later supported by the Air Force, recaptured a majority of the positions on the Indian side of the LoC infiltrated  by the Pakistani troops and militants.

It was on July 26, Indian forces successfully took command of the high outposts.   (AGENCIES)
