NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a high-level meeting of Chief Ministers of five states here on March 26 to discuss his ambitious Ganga cleaning project.
The meeting is expected to be attended by the Chief Ministers of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand.
Sources said today that the Prime Minister will discuss ways to clean Ganga and review the measures taken by these states in this endeavour.
The Prime Minister will also review the steps that can be taken to install sewage treatment plants in various states.
The Water Resources Ministry has asked the five states to submit detailed reports on the amount of sewage that flows into Ganga and its tributaries in these states. The report was submitted to the govt in December 2014. Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati said in Parliament in a written reply that 144 drains discharged sewage into the Ganga and the maximum number of such drains is in West Bengal (54), Uttar Pradesh (51), Bihar (25) and Uttarakhand (14).
The government has already devised action plans for ‘short-term’ (3 years), ‘medium-term’ (5 years) and ‘long-term’ (10 years and more) for cleaning the Ganga. (AGENCIES)
