JAMMU, July 29: A youth allegedly died after police brutality in the Bantalab area, sparking widespread outrage.
On Sunday, during a cricket match, a police team, including senior officers, reportedly raided a playing ground searching for a drug suspect. Eyewitnesses said that the officers brutally assaulted the youth and another individual with kicks and blows.
According to the deceased Shubam Sharma’s uncle, after being beaten, the police detained his nephew, promising he would be released after questioning.
“However, by 9:30 pm, after his release, the youth began experiencing severe breathing issues and chest pain. Despite being rushed to Government Medical College Jammu, he died during treatment,” said the uncle of the deceased.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the assault was carried out by an SHO-ranked officer and two other personnel. Click here to watch video
In response, locals, including the victim’s family and neighbours, blocked the Bantalab-Nardhani road for several hours, demanding accountability for the police officers involved, compensation for the family, and a Government job for the deceased’s younger brother.
To address the situation, ADC Law & Order Jammu, Ansuya Jamwal, assured that the accused officers, if any, would face justice.
She confirmed that an inquest has been initiated to determine the cause of death, and a magisterial probe will follow.
She further claimed that a Board of Doctors (BoDs) has been constituted for the post-mortem.
Regarding compensation, ADC Jamwal stated that the family would receive assistance from the District Red Cross Funds.
She also promised to discuss the possibility of providing a Government job to the deceased’s brother with senior officials.
