Police foils separatist march to UNMOGIP

Srinagar, Dec 10: Restrictions were imposed in parts of Srinagar today to prevent a protest march called by the separatists on the occasion of Human Rights Day while shutdown affected normal life in Kashmir.
Normal life remained affected due to shutdown called by separatists in Kashmir. Shops were closed and traffic was off the roads. However, private transport was plying.
Authorities imposed restrictions in the areas falling under the Police Stations of Khanyar, Nowhatta, Rainawari, MR Gunj, Safa Kadal, Maisuma and Kralkhud. Restrictions were also imposed in parts of areas falling under Kothibagh and Ram Munshibagh Stations to prevent any protest march by separatists.
Heavy contingents of police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were deployed in the areas placed under restrictions to prevent movement. The security forces had blocked the main roads with iron barricades and concertina wire.
Separatist had called the protest march to the headquarters of the UN Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) in Sonawar to highlight “human rights violations” in Kashmir. The march coincided with the World Human Rights Day observed annually on December 10.
Authorities had placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani under house arrest to prevent protest march to UNMOGIP. Heavy contingents of police was placed outside their residences and movement in and out was restricted.
The JKLF chairman and several activists of the outfit were detained in Srinagar after they tried to carry out protest march in Srinagar. Malik along with scores of his supporters tried to march towards UNMOGIP in Sonwar from Maisuma. However, police swung into action and detained him and few of his supporters. He was lodged in Kothi Bagh police station. Malik had gone into hiding during past few days to evade his arrest by the police.
Scores of people joined AIP’s protest March in Srinagar on the occasion of World Human Rights Day. Workers of AIP took out a protest march from Jawahar Nagar towards Lal Chowk. Protestors were carrying placards and banners and were chanting slogans seeking an end to “human rights abuses” in Kashmir.
However a heavy contingent of police led, by SP South stopped the procession near Raj Bagh, and used force to disperse the protestors. Several protesters including MLA Engineer Rashid were detained by Police.
