SRINAGAR, Oct 22: The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today asked Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to prevent exodus of non-local labourers from the Gagangir construction site where six workers and a doctor were killed in an attack on Sunday.
“After the barbaric attack at Sonmarg there are reports that the local admin is pressurising non local labourers to leave the Valley immediately. While I understand their obvious sense of panic, asking them to leave in this manner is not a solution,” she said in a post on X.
The former Chief Minister said the leaving of workers will create more difficulties and send a negative message to the country.
“(It) will only create more difficulties & sends a very bad message to the country. J&K recently witnessed peaceful terror free elections & this knee jerk reaction will only prove otherwise,” she said.
The PDP president said the move can also lead to outrage against Kashmiris working or studying in other parts of the country.
“Might also cause outrage against Kashmiris working & studying in other states. Request Chief Minister @OmarAbdullah & LG @manojsinha_ ji to intervene & at least give them enough time,” she added.
However, Police dismissed non-local laborers being asked to leave the Valley.
The rumors, which had spread across several platforms, sparked concern among laborers working in Kashmir.
In response, the Kashmir Police issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), assuring the public that the claims are entirely unfounded.
“The recent post in the social media about non-local labourers being asked to leave, is completely baseless. The J&K Police is committed to maintain security and a sense of safety to all intending to earn their livelihood,” read the official post from the Kashmir Police.
Authorities emphasized that maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of all residents and workers in the region remain top priorities.
The police further urged people not to believe or spread rumors that could disrupt the peace and harmony in the area.
