JAMMU, Dec 16: Police today resorted to lathi charge on the protesting people including rehriwalas, resulting into severe injuries to six persons outside the office of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) here.
The protestors including rehriwalas assembled outside the office of JMC Commissioner under the leadership of Hindu Shiv Sena State president Krishan Manhas to lodge their protest against the anti-encroachment drive of JMC in which there reharis were being damaged by the officials.
They started raising slogans against senior JMC officials and asked them to clear their stand over the irrational damaging of licensed reharis instead of seizing them.
The protestors said that they are not against the drive but are against the treatment meted out with the rehriwalas by the officials involved in the drive. Their rehries have damaged for which no compensation has been given to them, they alleged.
On getting information, police contingent lead by senior police officers rushed to the spot and resorted to the lathi charge without any dialogue, which resulted into severe injuries to six persons and minor injuries to several others.
The injured were immediately shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where their condition was stated to be stable, when last reports came in.
