Addressing a press conference, SSP Jammu Joginder Singh said the police were alerted around 6 PM on September 14 when the In-charge of Police Post Pouni Chak received information about the incident. He said local police, along with forensic experts, rushed to the scene and initiated an inquest proceeding under Section 174 of the CrPC. After completing the necessary legal formalities, the bodies were sent to the GMC Jammu mortuary for post-mortem.
The officer said that a crucial lead provided by family members, supported by CCTV footage showing a suspect near the victims’ home, prompted authorities to convert the inquest into a murder investigation under Section 302 of the IPC. He said the multiple police teams were formed under the supervision of SP Rural Jammu, and they swiftly identified the suspect using local and technical intelligence.
“The accused, Deepak Singh, also known as Sonu, a resident of Colonel Colony, Talab Tillo (Jammu) was arrested from Jalandhar. Deepak, an e-rickshaw driver, had known the victims for several years and often assisted them, especially as Sanjay Chandel was dealing with health issues,” the SSP said, adding, on the day of the crime, a dispute erupted between Deepak and the couple, which led to the fatal attack.
He said investigations revealed that Deepak, who was in financial distress, had gone to Jalandhar on September 3 and stopped answering calls from his family, leading them to file a missing person report on September 9. A further complaint was lodged by his family on September 13 regarding an unauthorized transfer of money by Deepak to a woman. During interrogation, the accused admitted to selling his phone, further highlighting his financial troubles as a potential motive for the crime.
