Political reservations for Gujjars demanded

JAMMU, Aug 12: Reiterating his appeal to Governor, N N Vohra, Shamsher Hakla Poonchi a prominent Gujjar leader and an intellectual today urged him to issue an Ordinance for reservation of Assembly Segments for Gujjar-Bakarwal (S.T) Community in the State.
Hakla, in a statement here said the political reservation was must for the Gujjars Bakarwals of the State who have been already given Scheduled Tribe status by Central Government in 1991.
He said though the community was granted ST status by the Centre 27 years ago, the State Government has failed to grant them political reservation. He said that recognizing the backwardness of Gujjars, Bakarwals of J&K, Government of India granted ST status to them but State Government neglected them altogether over the years
“So far as their participation in the State politics and administrative setup is concerned under Scheduled Tribe status norms, there should have been reservation of Assembly segment for Gujjars and Bakarwals in the State and the Lok Sabha constituencies but it did not happen any were in the State”, he said, adding the State Government has done a great injustice to community.
