This has reference to the news item ‘Farooq, Nitish for Bharat Ratna to Vajpayee’ DE Nov 19.
It will be in the interest of the nation if politicians stop politicsation of civil awards, particularly that of Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award. The award will lose relevance in case it is conferred upon the choosen one, and neglecting those deserving it. It should be awarded to those who in true sense have contributed to the development of the country. Otherwise also awards presented in different categories during Republic Day court controversy. There are allegation that these awards are presented keeping in different motives in mind and not on merit. In this way, these awards lose shine and with it lose credibility.
Therefore, committees awarding these awards should rise above parobial interests and have fixed, transparent criteria in mind while selecting deserving people.
