POLITICS-CHIDAMBARAM-DECISION No decision yet on PM’s participation in CHOGM: Chidambaram

CHENNAI, Nov 2: Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said a decision is yet to be made on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s participation at the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Colombo between November 15-17.
Speaking to reporters after meeting DMK president M Karunanidhi here, Mr Chidambaram said a decision is yet to be taken and the reports about Singh’s participation in CHOGM are incorrect.
He declined to share details of his meeting  with  Karunanidhi.
However, the meeting comes after Karunanidhi stating on October 31 that there should not even be a token participation by  India at the CHOGM to register protest over the alleged war crimes against Tamils in Sri Lanka.
He also said Congress would face consequences if the Prime Minister participate in the meeting. Mr Karunanidhi was responding to media queries on reports about Congress permitting Dr Singh to attend the meeting.
Tamil Nadu political parties including the state unit  of Congress is opposed to India participating in the CHOGM.
The state assembly on October 24 passed a unanimous resolution  urging the Centre not to send any representatives to the CHOGM, and sought that a decision to this effect be conveyed to Sri Lanka immediately.
The DMK which puled out of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government in March over centre’s policy on Sri Lankan Tamils, however, continues to maintain ties with the Congress party.
Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi was re-elcted to Rajya Sabha with Congress’ support this year.
Mr Chidambaram today also condemned the alleged murder of Isaipriya, a Sri Lankan media personality and urged that country’s government to take action against those responsible for the crime. (UNI)
