SRINAGAR, Nov 17: Dozens of students of Government Polytechnic College Srinagar today protested demanding punishment to “erring” evaluators whose “callousness” forced a student of the college to commit suicide in June this year.
Mohammad Adnan Hilal, who was a student of Electronics Engineering at Government Polytechnic College Srinagar, committed suicide by jumping into Jhelum River. He fled from his home as he was declared fail in his Physics paper with only 28 marks. However, after re-evaluation, he not only was found pass in Physics but also topped the class. In actual, he had secured 48 marks.
Led by Ghulam Muhammad Gilkar, the father of the deceased student, hundreds of Polytechnic College students including classmates of Adnan, assembled here at Press Enclave, Partap Park and sought punishment to erring evaluators. Holing banners, the protesters chanted slogans like ‘we want justice’ and alleged that callous attitude of evaluators forced Adnan to take the extreme step.
“It is a murder and not a suicide. The evaluators forced him to take the extreme step. They should be identified and punished,” said his classmate. The students blamed State Board of Technical Education for the fault and said that their errors would force many other bright students to take the extreme path.
Blaming system at Board and evaluators for his son’s death, father of the deceased student said that he will fight legally for justice.
