Polythene bags

Sir,
Apropos the news item’Check poythene entry-HC’ (DE, Nov6, 2o13).The directions of the Division Bench of the J&K High Court to the Commissioner, Sales Tax to check amd control the entry of polythene bags into the state of J&K are welcome and will, undoubtedly, help in curbing the use of polythene bags in our stateThe Hon’ble Court has taken a serious note of the polythene menace in the state and directed the concerned authorities to seize the vehicles carrying polythene material and not to release them till orders from the court.
It is a fact that polythene bags are a great hazard to the environment and our health.Unlike paper and jute bags, they are not biodegradable and hence  their disposal is a big problem. If thrown on the  ground, they continue to accumulate and are often mistaken by animals for food leading to the death of a large no of animals and birds. The worse is that the ingested bag remains in tact even after the death and decomposition of the  dead animal. Thus it lies around in the landscape where another victim may consume it and die.If burnt, plastic bags release many toxic gases which pollute the air and If washed by rain into the water bodies such as rivers, lakes, seas and oceans, they act as death trap for a no.of aquatic and marine animals. Thus, in view of their so many ill effects, it becomes the duty of one and all to say’ good bye’to the plastic bags once and for all and switch over to the cloth or jute bags for a better and healthier life.Plastic bags may be strong, lightweight and handy but nothing is more precious and valuable than our health and environment. So, we can’t afford to play havoc with our environment and  ruin our health.Ban on plastic bags need to be enforced strictly and violators should be awarded exemplay punishment to send a strong message to the people against using these bags.At the same time massive awareness campaign needs to be launched to educate the people about the harmful effects of the plastic bags on our health and environment in the general interest of public health.
Yours etc….
