KATRA, Feb 25: Up in arms against proposed ropeway project for Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, pony and palanquin owners alongwith locals of Purana Daroor held a strong protest demonstration, here today.
The protesters raised slogans against the Shrine Board administration and threatened indefinite strike if the proposed ropeway project between Tarakot Marg and Sanjhi Chhat is not shelved.
Leaders of the protesters said that proposed ropeway project was threat to the livelihood of hundreds of pony and palanquin owners. They said that the matter has already been brought into the notice of Shrine Board authorities and if their demand for shelving the project is ignored, they would have no option other than to resort agitational path.
The protesting people said that they were assured by the officials that no project will be started without taking them into consideration. “But we come to know that GR Infraprojects Limited officials reached Katra for the ropeway project. Moreover a notification in this regard was also published by the company recently regarding execution of concession agreement with the Shrine Board. This ropeway project between Tarakote Marg and Sanji Chhat along the 12-km track to the revered shrine atop the Trikuta hills in Reasi district will hamper the overall economy of Katra business,” they said warned intensified protest if their demand is not considered.
