Poonch assault accused nabbed

JAMMU, May 25: Police today arrested the accused involved in teasing and assaulting a woman of minority community in Poonch town on Thursday, which had led to wide spread protests and imposition of prohibitory orders on Friday.
SSP Poonch Shamsheer Hussain said the accused had taken shelter in forests in Poonch district after the incident. He was arrested this morning. He has been identified as Mohammad Jameel, son of Sadiq Sain, a resident of village Dalaan near Poonch.
The victim had hidden in the forests to escape wrath of people and police and hadn’t even taken food since Thursday, police said, adding out of eight police teams constituted by the SSP Poonch for arrest of the accused, one of them led by DySP Operations Javed Naaz apprehended him from the forests.
A case against the accused has already been registered at Poonch police station.
It may be mentioned that Poonch town had observed bandh for two days apart from massive protests from the minorities on Thursday and Friday leading to imposition of prohibitory orders. Normalcy was restored after Housing Minister Raman Bhalla, Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu and IGP Jammu Rajesh Kumar visited Poonch town and assured arrest of the accused at the earliest.
The SSP Poonch had constituted eight teams, each comprising 10 police personnel, for arrest of the accused.
