Poverty alleviation programme under project ‘Umeed’

JAMMU, July 8: J&K State Rural Livelihoods Mission under the aegis of Department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj is implementing programme for poverty alleviation under the nomenclature of Umeed in the State which aims at improving the livelihoods of the poor rural women. The State Government has initiated the flagship program under the guidance of National Rural Livelihoods Mission.
The programme was aimed at participatory identification of rural poor and subsequent augmentation of the existing livelihood opportunities through provision of financial assistance from the Mission. It also provides way forward for exploring new avenues of income generation.
Additional Mission Director, JKSRLM, Kapil Sharma along with State Project Manager (Monitoring & Evaluation) Dr. N.C. Prabhakar, visited Dansal block for reviewing the activities of program. The review was undertaken under the guidance of Dr G.N. Qasba, Mission Director JKSRLM & was part of series of visits to different blocks of Jammu Division.
The officers attended a meeting of Khanna Chargal Village Organisation in presence of resource persons from the Mission. About 50 women SHG members had an interaction with the officers and explained in detail about the changes brought in their life due to financial and social empowerment provided by the program.
On the occasion, the resource persons of the Dansal block apprised the officers that 529 Self Help Groups comprising of 5208 women members have been formed having their own savings of Rs. 44.33 lakh It was further informed that the Mission has provided capital amount of Rs. 1.40 crore to these SHGs which is being used for augmenting their livelihood activities. The banks have also extended credit of Rs. 68 lakh to 136 SHG members in the block.
