Power deficit in J&K

Without mincing words Union Minister of State for Power, Piyush Goyal says that only 10 percent of un-electrified households have been so far electrified in J&K under Government of India’s ambitious Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana. He informed that by April 30, 2017, only 32 out of 134 un-electrified villages in the State were electrified under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, which was launched by the Government of India on November 20, 2014. While targets of electrification in other states have been met, J&K has lagged behind.
The Minister held the media responsible for exaggerating and sensationalizing the situation in Kashmir which discouraged contractors from bidding for bringing electricity to the rural areas of the State especially Kashmir valley.
The Government should move in the matter and make an appeal to the media to desist from sensationalizing the ground situation and discouraging contractors from bidding. It should also bring awareness among the villagers of un-electrified areas that they should come forward and volunteer to help the power supply department in whatever way needed to bring power to their villages. The Union Minister of State minced no words when asked about power situation in the State. He said how people could expect 24×7 power supply when 70 per cent of power was lost in transmission and distribution. Unless that was remedied improvement in power supply was out of question. This depressing situation has to be reversed and the PDD has to take note of it.
