LADAKH, Apr 17: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has successfully charged the 11KV Tabbay Nallah feeder in Turtuk village, located near the Indo-Pak border in Ladakh.
This is a part of the rural electrification works being executed by POWERGRID under the PMDP scheme in both Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh.
As per a statement, out of the 22 villages that are to be electrified under this scheme, POWERGRID has already completed the electrification of 18 villages. The charging of the 11KV Tabbay Nallah feeder was achieved by tapping the 11KV Turtuk-Bogdang line, which was already constructed under the PMDP by POWERGRID.
The 11KV Tabbay Nallah feeder comprises of 11 CKM HT, 0.684 CKM LT-3 phase, 2.5 CKM 1-phase lines, and six distribution transformers with ratings of 63 KVA – 3, 25 KVA – 1, and 16 KVA – 2.
“The commissioning of this line was challenging due to the need for head loading of poles, erection material, and distribution transformers for a distance of 12 km,” said the statement.
Although the supply of Turtuk habitation still depends on state DG supply due to the lack of grid connectivity, the charging of the feeder will illuminate six habitations consisting of around 50 households for the first time after 76 years of independence, it said.
Ladakh is one of the most challenging workplaces due to its prevailing dry and cold climatic conditions, high altitude, and geographical viewpoints. The requirement for a special permit for the movement of laborers and transportation of men and material is necessary as it shares its borders with Pakistan and China. The temperature in the area varies from -40 degree to +22 degree Celsius, and the altitude varies between 8000 feet to 18000 feet.
