Pre-monsoon rains hit HP; 1 swept away in cloudburst in Chamba

SHIMLA : One person was swept away as a cloudburst today struck three villages in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh where several areas expereinced the first pre-monsoon showers.

The cloudburst struck Atulai, Sahu and Kidi villages of Chamba district and caused damage to houses, crops and roads while several parts of the state received heavy rains.

A villager in Atauli was washed away, while five houses were completely destroyed and 20 houses partially damaged and roads and crops also suffered extensive damage.

Chamba Deputy Commissioner M Sudha Devi said the rains and cloudburst wreaked havoc and one person was washed away, crops and roads suffered massive damage, five houses were destroyed and 20 villages were partially damaged.

The gushing waters entered the houses, damaged roads and crops and disrupted normal life.

The main highways have been restored while the link roads would be open for traffic by tomorrow evening, Sudha Devi said.

The local MeT office confirmed that pre-monsoon rains have started in the State and would continue for next six days and is an indication that Monsoon will arrive on time. (AGENCIES)
