Pre-monsoon showers cool Himachal

SHIMLA, June 20 : Pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms brought relief to parts of Himachal Pradesh, bringing down the mercury by four to five degrees Celsius in the last 24 hours and effectively ending a two-month-long dry spell.

The minimum temperature in Shimla on Thursday dropped to 26.9 degrees Celsius, a decrease of 2.6 degrees from Wednesday.

According to the Meteorological Office, Kahu in Hamirpur received 53.5 mm of rainfall, Kufri recorded 43.4 mm, Kandaghat 41.6 mm, Rajgarh 37 mm, Dharmshala 34 mm, Solan 30.6 mm, Kotkhai 30.2 mm, Mashobra 29 mm, Shimla 28.5 mm, Jogindarnagar 28 mm, Dalhousie 21 mm, Mehre 20 mm, Paonta 19.2 mm, Dharampur 18.6 mm, Narkanda 13 mm, Palampur 12.4 mm, Kasauli 12.2 mm, Naina Devi 10 mm, and Sundarnagar 10.1 mm.

The IMD forecast more rain in the next 24 hours, with the possibility of monsoon advancing in the state between June 22 and 23.

On Thursday, a storm with winds touching speeds up to 40 to 50 km per hour disrupted normal life as power supply and vehicular traffic were affected in some parts of the state.

The showers brought joy to agriculturists and apple growers as the fresh spell of rain is likely to benefit the sowing of Kharif crops and offseason vegetables.

However, the pre-monsoon rainfall did not alleviate the water crisis in the capital town as water supply remained less than that on Wednesday.

According to the Shimla Municipal Corporation, the town received 33.75 million litres per day (MLD) of water supply on Wednesday, which reduced to 30.85 MLD on Thursday. The decline in water supply to Shimla was attributed to increased silt in water sources due to heavy rain in a few places.
