SRINAGAR, June 23: A pregnant woman today delivered a baby outside the premises of the CHC Sumbal in district Bandipora after she was denied admission and was asked to first get a COVID-19 test done.
The expecting woman was brought into the hospital after she developed labor pain. However, the family members allege that she was denied admission and later delivered the baby outside the hospital premises.
The patient was identified as Zareefa wife of Muhammad Saleem Najar, a resident of Inderkoot. “We came here after she developed labor pain, but she along with her mother continued to lie there on those rocks until she delivered a baby there. They told us to get a COVID-19 test done. How was that possible for us to do?” a family member said.

The family said that not a single person from the hospital attended to her after the labor pain intensified. While she delivered a baby, both mother as well as the baby, are said to be doing well.
The family said that the aged mother of the patient pleaded the doctors but to no avail. “She wrapped the baby in her pheran (gown) and brought it inside the hospital; it was allowed to do after she pleaded them and touched their feet,” they said.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Bandipora, Dr Bashir Ahmad, said that there was no negligence on the part of the doctors or the paramedics. He, however, said that the Block Medical Officer (BMO) Hajin has formed an inquiry committee. “If anyone was found guilty, appropriate action will be taken,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Bandipora ordered an inquiry into the matter and has asked the inquiry officer to file a detailed report within a period of 3 days.
“The Sub Divisional Magistrate, Sumbal shall inquire into the incident of delivery of a pregnant lady outside the premises of CHC, Sumbal and alleged medical negligence. He shall submit a detailed report in 03 days positively along with concrete recommendations,” the order issued said.
