Sir,
Apropos a write-up on “Preserve the family system” by Dr Satya Dev Gupta (DE dated March 19, 2025).The learned author has nicely touched upon various aspects related to our age-old family system that is presently on the verge of breakdown. I appreciate this social topic though it’s valuable contents have been reproduced from the inaugural speech of Vice President of India delivered at 66th Kalidas Festival at Ujjain on 12th Nov, 2024. It is really a matter of grave concern for social scientists and the members of civil society to notice the prevailing family system where social values and ethics have vanished. It is felt that the decline in family values began perhaps from late 1980s onwards. The core component of social framework i.e age-old joint family system was gradually discarded that in turn led to adoption of nucleus family system. Subsequently, the impact of of western culture and materialism started overshadowing our age-old family system. It is now well realized that joint family system being the core component always acted as a fundamental bond of togetherness, brotherhood and social ethics in our inherited culture. But over the years, the gradual erosion led to so-called modernized society based on social principle of “My life is my life” leaving little space for the elderly members or parents to advice their off-springs on age-old social ethics. The Vice President of India has rightly advocated that Indian culture is known world over for its core principle of “Vasudev Kutumbukam” meaning the world is one family. It was further added that it remained our character and legacy to preserve rich values of our culture. The golden words of advice by the Vice President need immediate attention of the social scientists and the members of civil society emphasizing them to work collaboratively to create vast awareness and instill the core social values in youths to revive our value-based family system.
