Preserving human rights

GOC-in-C Northern Command calls protection of human rights as essential condition when forces are called upon to carry out anti-terrorist operations in J&K. Terrorists usually initiate combat in a condition in which collateral loss of life is almost inevitable. But the troops have been trained and strictly directed to maximally avoid loss of innocent lives. Unfortunately, a stray incident of violation of human rights is magnified beyond proportion whereas the humanitarian work done by the army in their respective areas is not highlighted. Strengthening his claim that Army has zero tolerance of violation of human rights, the Commander gave statistics to prove his statement. During past 20 years as many as 1524 allegations of human rights violations by the army were made out of which only 42 were found true. 124 army personnel including 41 officers and 83 JCOs have been found guilty of violation of human rights and have been given exemplary punishment. Whenever there is an allegation, the army commanders take note of it and conduct investigation. Additionally, the Army Headquarter has established a Human Rights Wing with the structure going down up to the Brigade level and it takes care of preservation of human rights during the period of action or peace. Commander of Northern Army was speaking to the personnel on the occasion of World Human Rights day celebrations.
Indian Army has a glorious record of human rights protection.  On several occasions, Indian Army was called upon by the United Nations to perform peace-keeping roll at various places round the globe from Korea to African Continent and it always won appreciation of the UN Secretary General for doing its job efficiently and dispassionately. We are proud that our Army has always maintained the high profile and status of our country and the nation. Nobody will doubt that Indian Army has the finest record of preserving human rights of one and all.
