President appoints Mohd Yousuf Wani as Addl Judge of J&K HC

JAMMU, Mar 21: President of India today appointed Judicial Officer Mohd Yousuf Wani as an Additional Judge of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
“In exercise of the power conferred by Clause (1) of Article 224 of the Constitution of India, the President appoints Mohd Yousuf Wani to be an Additional Judge of the J&K and Ladakh High Court for a period of two years with effect from the date he assumes the charge of his office”, read a notification issued by Union Ministry of Law and Justice.
Earlier this month, Supreme Court Collegium comprising of Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice B R Gavai recommended the name of Mohammad Yousuf Wani, a District and Sessions Judge Cadre officer holding the post of Member J&K Special Tribunal Srinagar on deputation, as a Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
On 21st September 2023, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues recommended the appointment of Mohammad Yousuf Wani as an Additional Judge of High Court.
In order to ascertain the suitability of the candidate for elevation to the High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium consulted Judges of the Supreme Court, who are conversant with the affairs of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and having regard to the material on record and all relevant factors, the Collegium was of the considered view that Mohammad Yousuf Wani was fit and suitable for being appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
Mohammad Yousuf Wani joined the judicial service on 9th December 1997 and has served as a Judicial Officer in various capacities. Prior to this, he practised at the Bar for over three years.
The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh has a sanctioned strength of 17 Judges including 13 Permanent Judges and 4 Additional Judges. With the appointment of Mohd Yousuf Wani, the number of sitting Judges of the High Court has increased to 16 including Chief Justice N Kotiswar Singh.
Other Judges include Justice Tashi Rabstan, Justice Atul Sreedharan, Justice Sanjeev Kumar Shukla, Justice Sindhu Sharma, Justice Rajnesh Oswal, Justice Vinod Chatterji Koul, Justice Sanjay Dhar, Justice Puneet Gupta, Justice Javed Iqbal Wani, Justice Mohd Akram Chowdhary, Justice Rahul Bharti, Justice Moksha Khajuria Kazmi, Justice Wasim Sadiq Nargal and Justice Rajesh Sekhri.
