Srinagar, Jan 9: President Baramulla Municipal Council Omar Kakroo today lost a no-confidence motion that was moved against him by several councillors of Baramulla Municipal Council.
Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Baramulla, Imtiyaz Ahmad said that they conducted a floor test in which 12 counsellors took part while seven chose to stay away.
Out of the 12-votes, 11 went against Omar Kakroo, losing the no-confidence motion. The election for chairman, as per officials, would be held after the government announces dates.
Omar Kakroo, however, termed the entire process as unconstitutional and sought a fresh election. “If they are sincere why did not they ask for a fresh no confidence motion? I think the complete process is politically motivated with an aim to dislodge the Congress Council here. I think everyone knows who is involved in it. The process is against the constitution of India and the Municipal Act. I have asked the Municipal officer to send the details of the entire process to higher-ups and see into it. If it is not done, I would not accept it. No one can dislodge me from my chair,” he said.
While divulging details, he said some counsellors moved a no-confidence motion against him on December 28 and a meeting was called regarding that on January 2. “But for some unknown reasons, the meeting was cancelled. Another meeting was called today. I would like to inform here that the people who had started the no-confidence motion had already withdrawn it. I do not know if the no-confidence of motion already stands withdrawn what drama was enacted here today,” he asked.
Sources said, Touseef Raina is likely to replace Kakroo as the next President MCB. The councillors opposed to Kakroo had said he does not enjoy the support of the majority.
