President stresses on modernisation of tax laws

NAGPUR, Apr 29:President Pranab Mukerjee today said collection of direct taxes in 1860-61 was just Rs 30 lakh and revised target for 2012-13 was Rs 5,65,835 crore.
Mr Mukherjee was addressing the valedictory ceremony of the 65th Batch of Indian Revenue Services at the premier institution at NADT here.
Delivering his chief guest speech, the President said as per the budget estimates for direct taxes for year 2013-14, it is likely to be around Rs 6.68,000 crore, around 54 per cent of the gross tax revenue receipts of the Central Government.
He said India is the third largest economy country in the world and the changing structure of the Indian economy and its integration with the world economy has brought new challenges to the tax administration and hence modernization of tax law is very crucial. Mr Mukherjee also reminded the officials that tax collection is neither simple nor popular task that must be performed with humanity and sincerity and they should be soft to the clients. (UNI)
