Prez calls for making delivery of justice fast, affordable

NEW DELHI: President Ramnath Kovind on Saturday expressed concern over the delay in and cost of delivering justice to the poor and called for making legal services affordable.
Inaugurating the National Law Day function here, President Kovind stressed on finding alternative ways of delivering quick justice, pointing out to the massive backlog of cases.
He said today the country’s legal system had become very expensive, which was partly because of the long time take to dispose off a case.
“The idea that a relatively poor person cannot reach the doors of justice for a fair hearing only because of financial or similar constraints, violates our constitutional values and our republican ethics. It is a burden on our collective conscience,” he said.
Today’s was an age of information technology, which should be used to the full to expedite the process of delivering justice, the President said. “The judiciary and the legal system must be responsive to technology,” he said. (AGENCIES)
