Probe in closed 1984 riots cases can get a second look

NEW DELHI, Aug 2: The Supreme Court today requested the ASG to take instructions from the Union Government to apprise it regarding the appointment of a committee which would be set up to monitor the probe in those cases in the 1984 riots, which were closed.
Riots that broke out after assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, had allegedly claimed approximately 2,400 lives in Delhi alone.
A bench, headed by Justice Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices Amitava Roy and AM Khanwilkar, heard the submissions made by apex court lawyer H S Phoolka, and others. Additional Solicitor General (ASG), Tushar Mehta, appeared for the Centre.
Counsel Phoolka told the three-judge bench that in 199 cases, the investigation had been closed down and in nine,  the probe was going on. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the 1984 riots cases.
On February 20, the Centre had filed a status report regarding the investigation carried out by the SIT in the  riots cases.  (UNI)
