JAMMU, Aug 26: Various problems confronted by deaf and dumb persons were highlighted in a meeting held at Press Club here which was conducted by president of J&K Association of Deaf, Er V K Gupta and general secretary Bhushan Kesar. Prominent social worker Pankaj Kohli was invited as a special guest.

Association president Er V K Gupta highlighted various demands of the members of association on behalf of general secretary Bhushan Kesar, who is also suffering from physical disability.
After hearing the demands of the members, Pankaj Kohli demanded that Hearing and Speech Therapy Department headed by Doctorate level Audiologist and Speech Pathologist for early screening, speech therapy and treatment for deaf persons should be opened by Government in GMC Jammu, Super Speciality Hospital, as have been opened in other parts of the country.
The members also demanded national and international level sports activities for deaf and dumb persons; Rehabilitation and vocational training program centres, where they could learn sewing, chalk-candle making, carpentry, welding etc so that they could earn their bread and butter and become useful component of the society. Members also demanded scholarships for students of 8th, 10th, 12th and above classes.
Pankaj Kohli also demanded that office accommodation be allotted to the association by State Government so that they could conduct meetings. Kohli added that he would fight for the rights of people facing hardships due to physical disability.
Rotarian Robin Mehta and Sanjeev Vaid, past presidents of Rotary Club Jammu City also attended the meeting and shared their views regarding hardships being faced by deaf and dumb community.
