NEW DELHI:  The Supreme Court Collegium has agreed with some of the suggestions made in the revised Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today.

Replying to a calling attention in the Rajya Sabha on the situation arising out of impasse in the appointment of judges in High Courts and Supreme Court, Mr Prasad said the Government was trying to make the appointment process transparent, fair and accountable within the parameters set by various pronouncements of the Supreme Court and at the same time ensuring the independence of Judiciary.

He said the Supreme Court has decided that the Government may finalise the existing MoP by supplementing it in consultation with the Chief Justice of India.

He said in view of the importance of the matter, the Government has constituted a team of Ministers to deliberate upon on draft MoP for the appointment of Chief Justice and judges of the Supreme Court and for appointment and transfer of Chief Justices and judges of High Courts.  Seeking clarification on the matter, Mr Vivek Tankha of the Congress said there was total stalemate in the appointment for the last one-and-a half year with system facing a complete collapse.

Mr Satish Chandra Misra of the BSP said the appointment of judges in the lower judiciary should continue.

Mr Rajeev Shukla of the Congress said the wheel of justice has come to standstill due the impasse.  Mr Naresh Agrawal of the SP asked why the issue of MoP cannot be discussed in the House.  (AGENCIES)
