HYDERABAD, Mar 3:
The proctor of English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) was booked today for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 29-year-old PhD student from Jammu and Kashmir, police said.
“A case of abetment to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC has been registered against professor H K Vizra,” said inspector P Ashok attached to Osmania University (OU) police station.
Kamran Mudasir (29) committed suicide by hanging himself at his hostel room on the campus of the city-based Osmania University (OU), housing the EFLU, last evening.
Police said Mudasir was issued memo by prof Vizra on January 29 to explain his “misbehaviour” with a roommate and another PhD student Vasim Salim who had earlier complained to the authorities about “repeated physical and mental harassment” being meted out to him by Mudasir.
“Salim and Mudasir were good friends, however, they fell out eventually because of personal differences and developed animosity,” Police Commissioner Anurag Sharma told reporters.
According to police, Salim and Mudasir were taken to OU police station on March 1 after professor Vizra rang them up about the altercation between the duo.
“Salim even gave a written complaint regarding the harassment including assault against Mudasir. However, police counselled both the students and chief hostel warden, EFLU, Vedasharan gave an undertaking that he will look into the matter and sort out the differences,” Sharma said.
Meanwhile, a number of EFLU students alleged harassment and inaction on the part of the university authorities after the incident took place last evening.
The top cop said Mudasir’s body is being sent to his native Parigam in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir after postmortem.
Sharma, along with senior police officers, including Director General of Police (Law and Order) S A Huda, visited the hospital where Mudasir was rushed after he was found hanging, and discussed the matter with university authorities. (PTI)
