Prof at KU among 28 die in Kashmir, 2451 test +ve

Rlys extend suspension of services till May 24

Srinagar, May 16: Kashmir today reported a spike in the COVID-19 deaths with 28 succumbing to the virus, the highest so far since last year, while 2451 tested positive taking the Jammu and Kashmir death toll to 3149.
Those who died today include a senior Professor at Kashmir University and HoD of Electronics Department.
Professor GM Bhat, a resident of Chewa Safapora in Ganderbal district, succumbed to the virus at JLNM hospital where he was admitted a few days back. He had earlier served as Dean and Director of NIT in Srinagar at Zakura Campus.
Others who died today include a 70-year-old man from Pandrethan Srinagar, a 70-year-old man from Lurgu DH Pora Kulgam. a 50-year-old woman from Fateh Kadal, a 59-year-old man from Terboni Karnah Kupwara, a 65-year-old from Batwara Srinagar, a 65-year-old woman Bemina Srinagar, an 80-year-old from Lalbazar Srinagar, a 68-year-old from Habbakadal Srinagar, an 80-year-old woman from Tral Pulwama, a 55-year-old from Mattan Anantnag , a 70-year-old from Rajbagh Srinagar, a 65-year-old from Lal Bazar Srinagar, a 70-year-old woman from Bota Kadal Srinagar, a 65-year-old from Batamallo Srinagar, a 75-year-old man from Charar-e-Sharief Budgam and a 90-year-old from Sumbal Bandipora, a 65-year-old woman from Dialgam, a 70-year-old from Hanji Danter, a 63-year-old woman from Bachpora Srinagar and a 64-year-old man from Khanyar Srinagar.
Those who tested positive today include 831 from Srinagar, Baramulla 252, Budgam 320, Pulwama 177, Kupwara 148, Anantnag 199, Bandipora 89, Ganderbal 152, Kulgam 228 and Shopian 55.
With fresh cases, Srinagar has now 58030 positive cases with 8425 active, 48923 recovered, 682 deaths; Baramulla has 18038 positive cases with 3440 active, 14376 recovered, 222 deaths; Budgam reported 16022 positive cases with 3994 active cases, 11876 recovered, 152 deaths; Pulwama has 10742 positive cases with 2642 active, 7962 recovered and 138 deaths; Kupwara has 9372 positive cases, 1813 active, 7439 recoveries, 120 deaths; Anantnag district has 11547 positive cases with 4076 active, 7335 recovered, 136 deaths; Bandipora has 6953 positive cases, with 897 active and 5982 recoveries,74 deaths; Ganderbal has 6968 positive cases with 1136 active, 5770 recoveries and 62 deaths; Kulgam has 7760 positive cases with 3435 active, 4245 recoveries and 80 deaths while as Shopian has 4481 positive cases, 1331 active cases, 3106 recoveries and 44 deaths.
Moreover, they said, 3934 more COVID-19 patients have recovered including 2749 from Kashmir valley.
And in the meantime, District administration in Srinagar today ordered that standalone shops dealing with fruits and vegetables, dairy products, grocery items, meat and chicken etc shall be allowed to open between 6 am to 10 am only till May 24.
In an order issued here, the District Magistrate said that the Permissible and Non-permissible activities remain the same as per the previous order but standalone shops dealing with Fruits and Vegetables, Milk/dairy products, grocery items, meat and chicken etc. shall be allowed to open between 6:00 am to 10:00 am only.
“In view of harvest of Strawberry and Cherry crops, Parimpora Mandi can open between 5 am to 11 am, only for loading/unloading, packaging and dispatching etc. “There shall be no general public entry into the Mandi. Curfew Passes will be issued to concerned traders on the recommendations of Area Marketing Officer (AMO) Srinagar”, the order said.
Railway today extended the suspension of train services from Banihal to Baramulla and vice versa due to COVID-19 till May 24.
On May 10, the authorities suspended the services in view of the COVID-19 situation in Kashmir and as per the guidelines and SOPs issued by the Government. The Railways have now extended the suspension of the services till May 24.
In the meantime, Corona curfew continued to remain in place for the 17th day today in Srinagar and other districts of Kashmir in order to prevent the deadly virus from spreading.
Police and paramilitary troopers have been deployed in strength on roads across Srinagar and other places in Kashmir. The main roads were blocked at several places with iron barricades and concertina wires to prevent vehicular movement.
Police today arrested 19 persons, lodged 10 FIRs and also realized fine to the tune of Rs 144,270 from 907 people for violating the guidelines/rules throughout Kashmir.
Police said that its special drive against the violators of COVID-19 guidelines, rules continued throughout all the districts of Kashmir to ensure that people adhere to SOPs and guidelines.
Authorities today sealed a premier eatery – Raj Palace Hotel and Restaurant – in Kupwara town over violation of lockdown.
The hotel was found working routinely even as prohibitory orders, restraining such activities were already in place in the district. The hotel and restaurant was sealed by the team of the district officials.
