Prof Gupta warns against disbanding VDCs

JAMMU, Dec 31: Denouncing the voices being raised against the Village Defence Committees (VDCs) by the controversial elements, the Former Union Minister, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta alleged that an attempt is being made to malign the forces which have performed yeoman’s task to fight cross border terror and generate a sense of security amongst people in general, especially the nationalists at far off places. This vilification campaign has been launched in a bid to rouse the communal sentiments and extend indirect support to the ultras, he added.
Prof. Gupta recalled that after the cleanse of the nationalists in the troubled Valley of Kashmir in early 90`s, the erstwhile Doda district and certain other hilly areas of Jammu region were on the target of the terrorists. After due consideration both at the State and Central level the VDCs were organized. These VDCs along with Special Police Officers (SPOs) performed well and generated a sense of security amongst the people in a most difficult situation. Their great services were acknowledged at the Government level as many of the VDC members and SPOs sacrificed their lives to defeat the cross border terror, he observed and said that mistake can be made by anyone but it does not mean the entire force is bad.
Prof. Gupta said that anyone who would commit wrong, has to face the law but it was deplorable to seek the disbanding the entire set up especially when the dangers are not yet over.
He pleaded for enhancing the emoluments of the SPOs as was promised by various organizations at different times especially at the eve of the last Assembly elections.
