Prof Laura of Kazakhstan delivers lecture at KU

SRINAGAR, Sept 19:  Prof (Dr) Laura Yerekesheva, Head, Central and South Asian Studies, Institute of Oriental Studies, Almaty, Kazakhstan, today delivered a lecture at the Centre of Central Asian Studies (CCAS), University of Kashmir (KU), on a topic of contemporary significance “When Cultures Merge: The Inter-religious Interaction in 19th Century Kazakh Steppe”.
A large number of faculty members, scholars and students participated in the event and had a scholarly interaction with the speaker.
In her presentation Prof Laura highlighted the significance of inter-religious interaction in the contemporary world. The focal point of her deliberation was interplay between culture and religion.
She said “Although culture represents an inclusive system, religion is regarded as most important realm of culture. Some of the prominent institutions in central Asia especially at Samarkand, Bukhara, Kheva and Khokand promoted pluralistic tendencies and religious environment.”
Prof GM Mir, Director, Area Study Centre, presided over the session and gave the concluding remarks while Prof GN Khaki introduced the topic and presented vote of thanks on the occasion.
