JAMMU, July 29: A one-day National seminar on ‘Texts and Contexts of Identity in Literature and Language organised by the Department of English University of Jammu in collaboration with Prof. D.K. Rampal Memorial Trust and inaugurated in Brigadier Rajinder Singh auditorium of the University by the prominent dignitaries of the University and Civil Society. They also released a Souvenir in this session. Prof. R.D. Sharma, former Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu was the chief guest in the inaugural function whereas Prof Naresh Padha, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu presided over.
In his inaugural address the chief guest congratulated the organisers for organising the seminar in memory of a visionary, academician and administrator, Prof. D.K. Rampal.
“Such platforms are important because here academia and galaxy of scholars engage in meaningful discussions that focus on thinking and rethinking the issues that have attenuated the society for long. The issue of Identity is very topical and relevant in the present world order and needs such intellectual deliberations for profound understanding of its socio-political and religio-cultural implications” he added.
Prof Padha called late Prof. D.K Rampal, a towering personality as a teacher and also as an able administrator whose contribution can never be forgotten. “Re-looking the social issues through the lens of literature has always been an appropriate proposition. In the changing research scenario social relevance of research has assumed a great importance as well as publication for visibility. I congratulate English Department for choosing a relevant theme for this academic endeavour.”, he added.
Prof. Shravan Kumar, a renowned scholar in the field of Literary Studies, was the keynote speaker. In his address he traced all the issues embedded in the fabric of identity discourses from their macrocosmic level at the global scenario to the microcosmic one in the Indian context, and observed that now is the time when the subjects and the objects are exchanging their positions, and these shifting paradigms need to be studied in their totality.
Former Vice Chancellor of Jammu University and Executive Member, Prof. D.K Rampal Trust, Prof R.R Sharma also spoke on the occasion, and highlighted the vision and activities of the Trust.
Earlier the programme started with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries followed by the formal welcome address by Prof. Sucheta Pathania, Head, Department of English, and Convener of the seminar who also outlined the purpose and structure of the Seminar. Prof. Monika Sethi, former Head of English Department, proposed the vote of thanks. Swati Vijay conducted the proceedings.
Later in the day, in the plenary session, Prof. Anu Shukla, Dean, Faculty of Arts, Choudhary Devi Lal University and Prof. Vivek Sachdeva from Guru Gobind Indraprastha University were the speakers.
